In my first EMF article I talked about my sensitivity to electrical magnetic frequencies (EMFs), and how I was able to successfully mitigate radiation coming from a nearby cell tower and from neighbor’s Wi-Fi routers while sleeping.  In this article I will discuss other things I’ve done to reduce my exposure to non-ionizing radiation.

There has been a lot of research done on the negative effects of radio frequencies emitted by cell phones.  Devra Davis talks about this around the world.  The pamphlet that comes with new cell phones mentions not to hold a phone within inches from the head.  At the very least, do not hold a cell phone directly against your head.  And do not keep a phone in a pocket.  Over time men both men and women could have infertility.  Babies and young children should never be exposed to cell phones or tablets or computers.  Their skulls are softer and the radiation penetrates much deeper than it does for an adult. The governor of Alabama has posted about EMFs being a health hazard.  Some countries are banning Wi-Fi from children’s classrooms.

I bought a special case from lessemf.com for my cell phone, in addition to air pod headphones, so that I could keep the phone a few feet away from my body while talking on it.  The more popular cheaper earbuds will unfortunately transfer radiation up through the cord to the metal bud in your ear, which is definitely not a good thing.  I slowly weaned myself off my cell phone.  I kept it on airplane mode, and two or three times a day I turned it on briefly to check for messages.  For many people with EHS they are not even able to own a cell phone due to debilitating symptoms, such as burning feelings, headaches, and/or shock-like feelings.

I called the local phone carriers requesting an old-fashioned land line, but there were no available options within the area I live.  Some claimed to have land lines, but there was still Wi-Fi involved.  Finally, I bought a regular corded phone for about twenty dollars at a hardware store and signed up for Vonage service.  The phone hooks up to my computer.

When I signed up for internet service I first tried using a special blocking bag to put over the router, but for some reason, it did not reduce the radiation enough for my liking.  I used both of my EMF meters to check the levels.  I switched to using an Ethernet cord, and called Comcast to have both the private and public Wi-Fi disabled.   I made sure to speak to the advanced technicians who are much more knowledgeable.  I check the router regularly with my RF meter because the Wi-Fi can be turned on again by default, like after a power outage or interruption in service.  Also, I learned how to log into my internet account with special passwords to make sure the Wi-Fi remains disabled.  Using a hard-wired computer is actually faster and safer than using Wi-Fi.

I was also learning about grounding my body to the earth, also known as earthing, to help release harmful man-made electrical charges.  I began this practice by touching trees and moss during my walks in the woods.  As time passed I learned it was best to have my bare feet placed directly on the ground.  I would make sure to go somewhere away from buildings, underground wiring and or gas pipes.  I’d sit on a pillow on a patch of grass that was not treated with chemicals, take off my shoes and socks, and chill.  The moister, the better.  The longer the better, but even a minute or two is enough.  It was amazing how relaxed this made me feel.

There are varied theories about the benefits of using earthing mats indoors.  Make sure to do research before investing in mats that plug into electrical outlets.  If you ground incorrectly you could actually be attracting electrical fields.  Dr. Laura Koniver’s website www.intuition-physician.com explains all about grounding.

You are supposed to ground the enclosure either to a copper stake outside or to a safe electrical outlet.  Since I lived in a second-floor apartment, grounding outside wasn’t really an option.  I bought an outlet tester from a hardware store to make sure my outlets were grounded properly.  I used a cord with an alligator clip on one end which I attached to the foil enclosure, and then plugged the other end into a safe outlet.  After trying this out a few nights I decided I didn’t like the zingy feeling so I stopped using the grounding cord.  (There may have been a trace amount of electricity backing up.)

I don’t currently have an electrical smart meter to be concerned about, but more and more of the population do have smart meters on their houses.  These new meters emit high amounts of radio frequencies and dirty electricity.  The building biologist that I had called for advice had become electrically hypersensitive himself after sleeping for over a year above a bank of smart meters in the basement of his apartment complex.  So, if you are having insomnia I suggest you check out whether you are being exposed to one or more smart meters.  Often the older analog meters are being swapped out for smart meters by the utility companies without a homeowner being aware.  If you realize you are already being exposed to a smart meter there are ways to shield them to prevent radiation from entering your home.  If your local company hasn’t already replaced yours, you can research ways to put a lock on it to prevent it from being replaced while you’re not at home.  Some communities allow their residents to opt out for medical reasons.  To learn more, you can watch a great documentary on www.youtube.com called Take Back Your Power by Josh del Sol.

Regarding dirty electricity (DE) from incorrect home wiring, dimmer switches, solar panels, which could be impacting your health, there are ways to mitigate this problem.  To find a building biologist in your area go to www.buildingbiologistinstitute.org or www.techwellness.com or check your local listings.  Also, Jeromy Johnson has an incredible amount of information on his site www.emfanalysis.com about ways to decrease DE, in addition to how to measure EMFs, what meters are best.

Even though I personally am not supersensitive to “normal” electrical appliances (some people with EHS feel like they are being electrocuted when going near a stove), I made a point to reduce my exposure which can be cumulative.  I stopped using my hair dryer because of having memory problems possibly as a result of holding it close to my head for many years. You can go to emfacademy.com to see ratings of which hair dryers have lower amounts of radiation.

In addition to grounding, I started to do daily Epsom salt foot baths to detoxify and to increase magnesium.  Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt’s website www.klinghardtinstitute.com explains how to do this.
