Sunscreens – I am adamant about not using sunscreens containing chemicals because I personally believe that chemicals become even more toxic when exposed to heat. What is the point of applying a substance to prevent cancer, only to have the ingredients possibly cause cancer. So, I only use sunscreens that contain a mineral barrier instead of chemical, i.e. silver or zinc. If you are my age, you may remember life guards of our youth lathering a thick layer of white gunk on their noses. Nowadays, the products can be spread out with barely a hint of that white stuff. Currently the sunscreen I use is called Raw Love All Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30. It is for face and body and is expensive but a little goes a long way.
Insect Repellants – I am constantly trying different products to repel mosquitoes and ticks. My favorite mosquito repellant is Beat It All Natural Insect Repellant. It is for people and pets and is Deet free. To keep ticks from climbing from the ground up my ankles I use tea tree oil mixed in white vinegar which I spray on my sneakers. I recently saw an outdoorsman talk about a tick repellant which he swears by. He mixes 15 drops coconut essential oil with water in a spray bottle and sprays all over his clothes.
There are two brands of incense that I alternately light on my campsite at dusk to repel mosquitoes while I eat supper. One is Enjoy Nature 100% Natural Mosquito Repellent Incense Sticks and the other is NeemAura Citronella Outdoor Sticks.
While sleeping in a tent or my car I make sure to have on hand a mosquito zapping “tennis racket.” The ones I have used range in price from under ten dollars to about forty dollars. I personally prefer the battery-operated ones, but there are also rechargeable ones.
I have yet to find an effective chemical-free LED mosquito zapper that one would hang nearby or set on a table. Please let me know of any that have worked for you!!!!
